At its core Dev8D (funded by JISC, and organised as part of the Developer Community Supporting Innovation project - DevCSI for short, a community building project, engaging developers working in the education sector) is a very cost effective way of running high quality training. Dev8D can ultimately help you become a better programmer. This means you can go back to your institution having been developed, inspired, invigorated, challenged, better connected and having shared ideas with your colleagues in the UK and internationally. Most importantly you are armed with new skills and enthusiasm to help your institutions and organisations develop better, more efficient and well used systems and services. The aim of Dev8D is to bring together developers from across the education sector and wider in order to learn from one another and ultimately create better, smarter technology for learning and research. Dev8D is the major UK event in the year for educational developers from further and higher education.
We know that you learn a lot because you tell us what you learn, do and make, and what a rewarding time you have! We think the reasons for this may be because the spirit of the event is about learning in a playful, enjoyable, engaging and fulfilling way. We believe by doing this you learn better! This is not an ordinary training event! Death by powerpoint it is not! It it very much a doing event.
The tutorials / workshops / lightning talks / projects / challenges delivered at Dev8D are run largely by your peers, people like you, and sometimes they are you (if you want to be involved, you just need to tell us before or even during the event!). Nearly all of the people at Dev8D give up their time for free because they believe in the spirit of the event and passionately believe in give something back to their colleagues. They are willing to share what they know and the mistakes they have made. They want to inspire and motivate you! How many sectors of work do you know like that?
We know you love this event, as you keep coming back for more (there were 150 participants at Dev8D 2009 and nearly 500 last year - Dev8D 2010)! The work you do at the event, could save your institutions time and money, with the things you learn and the ideas you get and swap with each other. Most of all, Dev8D is about developing yourself amongst supportive colleagues who are in the same boat as you!
Dev8D's high quality training costs a fraction of the price to organise compared to that of the commercial sector. Dev8D is free again for you this year because we know many of you use your own money and time to come here and because you value the event so much.
Dev8D, isn't however free to the organisers, it isn't cheap to run so we could still do with some help if we are going to continue running events like this in the future. If you are a potential sponsor, or know someone that might be able to sponsor this event, please see the sponsorship page.
Dev8D this year, will take place over two days, however see below about Dev8D+ to extend your Dev8D experience.
Please see Dev8D+ for more training opportunities the day before Dev8D making your Dev8D experience even longer.
Read more about why you should attend and take a look at the event programme.
The DevCSI project of which Dev8D is a part, wants to prove the value of having local developers working in education. So, if you have stories of some innovative work you or colleagues have done in the education sector that has saved it lots of money and time (even better if you can prove it), we want to know, so please tell us.
